Wood Thrush
(Hylocichla mustelina)

Picture
Our only breeding thrush, and the only one expected during summer months.

Bold chest spots, along with a reddish head and upper back separate this species from other thrushes.

Common in Mammoth Cave N.P., preferring mature forest. Check the woods around the visitor center campground and near the amphitheater, as well as other forest areas throughout the park.

Best found by its musical call, for which this bird has been nicknamed the "flute of the woods."
