Purple Martin
(Progne subis)

Picture

These colonial swallows are easily found where area residents have put up boxes or gourds for them.

Martins regularly fly over Mammoth Cave N.P., but none are known to live and nest in the park.

These are the only known U.S. birds that have no natural nest sites. All martin colonies use human-provided nest sites.
