Broad-winged Hawk
(Buteo platypterus)

​A small  woodland hawk; may be somewhat tame when found on a perch.

A breeding season species only, separated from other local hawks by bold, broad tail bands.

Moves through the Kentucky in good numbers during spring and fall migration periods. 

Breeding birds in Mammoth Cave can usually be found near the Maple Springs parking lot and on Flint Ridge Road near the MC Baptist Church.
