Wood Duck
(Aix sponsa)

Year-round resident. Found on ponds and rivers, never in open water.

Females identified by characteristic elongated eye ring.

Smallish duck; note squared off tail in flight. Listen for whistling calls and wings in flight.

In Mammoth Cave NP, wood ducks nest on Sloan's Crossing Pond. Check the back of the pond in the edge bushes. Also, check the Green and Nolin Rivers year-round.
