Northern Bobwhite
(Colinus virginianus)

The only quail in the eastern U.S., these grassland birds have been in steep decline for the past fifty years.
Bobwhite can still be found in appropriate habitat; most easily located by hearing their ringing calls.
Mammoth Cave N.P. habitat is largely wrong for quail; they might be found occasionally in grassy habitat near the southern end of the bike trail.
